What is Composite Bonding?

Composite bonding is a cosmetic dentistry procedure, also known as dental bonding or aesthetic bonding, and can be used for the following purposes:

  • Repairing chipped or cracked teeth
  • Covering stains or discoloration on teeth
  • Closing gaps between teeth
  • Altering the shape, size, or color of teeth
  • Covering exposed tooth roots
  • Filling cavities
  • Making minor cosmetic adjustments

Step-by-Step Procedure

First, the dentist cleans the tooth to eliminate plaque or dirt and roughens the tooth surface (enamel). Then, the dentist applies a conditioning liquid to etch the tooth enamel, making it suitable for the bonding agent.

After drying, a bonding agent is applied to create a better bond between the tooth surface and resin.

Next, he applies a tooth-colored (composite) resin to the teeth in layers, molding and smoothing the resin to achieve the desired shape.

Then, he uses a curing lamp that emits concentrated, high-intensity light in the blue light spectrum, which initiates the photoinitiators (photosensitive chemicals) present in the resin. This creates a chain reaction, causing the resin molecules to link together and form a hard, plastic-like material.

Afterward, he polishes the resin to match the color of your natural teeth. Water spray equipment is also used to minimize the sensation of heat.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Costs less than other options such as veneers or crowns.
  • Very little tooth enamel (the outer surface) is removed.
  • Ideal for closing small gaps between teeth without highly invasive (surgical) procedures.
  • The entire process can usually be completed in one visit.
  • If something goes wrong, it can be easily fixed or reversed.
  • Helps to improve biting and chewing function.

Cons

  • Not permanent; can last 3-10 years with regular touch-ups, but not as durable as other procedures like veneers and crowns.
  • It can lose its color if you consume over coffee, tea, wine, and tobacco.
  • You have to undergo professional cleanings and follow good oral hygiene practices to maintain the appearance and longevity of bonding.
  • Can be used to change the shape but is not suitable for more comprehensive orthodontic solutions.

I did Hijama (wet cupping) with Dr Ebtisam Kotkat. I was initially nervous about the treatment, however once I started I could feel the difference. She also gave me an amazing massage and got rid of the knots in my neck. After the treatment, I felt like a new person - refreshed and totally relaxed. I would highly recommend a treatment with Dr Kotkat.

Frequently Asked Question

At Kaiton Polyclinic composite bonding treatments start from 300 AED.

It depends on the condition of your teeth. The most common alternatives are porcelain veneers and crowns.

You can get dental bonding as many times as you want If healthy tooth structure or enamel is remaining.

Yes, you can, but it’s recommended to avoid tea for the first 24-48 hours after the procedure. Also, try not to consume it excessively, as these types of liquids can cause discoloration of the teeth.

Do not attempt this on your own. Always visit a nearby clinic or hospital and consult with a dentist to avoid any serious complications.

Yes, you can eat an apple with bonded teeth, but it’s best to avoid biting directly into hard foods like apples. Instead, try consuming them in natural juices or by cutting them into small pieces, as the composite resin isn’t very strong and could break.

Enamel cannot regenerate because it is made of minerals and doesn’t contain living cells. Once it’s eroded or damaged, the body cannot repair or replace it naturally.

If you have no enamel left, or if you have severe tooth decay or damage, you often need stronger solutions like crowns or veneers. Large gaps between teeth might also require orthodontic treatment instead of bonding.

Yes, most patients have stated that they were unable to distinguish between the bonded areas and their natural tooth structure. After the composite resin used in bonding hardens and is polished, it integrates seamlessly with the surrounding teeth, matching both texture and color.

It’s crucial to follow good oral hygiene practices like brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and having regular dental check-ups to prevent decay and ensure the longevity of both the natural teeth and the composite bonding.
