Understanding Orthognathic Surgery

Orthognathic surgery, also known as corrective jaw surgery, is a specialized procedure performed to align the jaws and teeth, enhancing their functionality. This surgery addresses abnormalities in the jawbones and teeth alignment. Typically, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, in collaboration with orthodontists, perform this surgery once a patient has stopped growing, usually in their late teens or early twenties.

Why Consider Orthognathic Surgery?

Orthognathic surgery can benefit patients experiencing issues such as:

  • Difficulty chewing, biting, or swallowing
  • Speech problems
  • Chronic jaw pain and headaches
  • Excessive wear of teeth
  • Sleep apnea
  • Facial injury or birth defects
  • Protruding jaw or receding chin
  • Malocclusion (misaligned bite)

The process not only makes it easier for the person to breathe, speak, and chew, but it may also improve the appearance of their face.

The Orthognathic Surgery Process

The journey to a transformed smile begins with a thorough consultation and evaluation.

Consultation & Evaluation

An initial consultation with an oral/maxillofacial surgeon to assess the need for surgery through examination, X-rays, and imaging.

A pre-surgical orthodontic treatment to align teeth for jaw repositioning. It can take 6-18 months.

Imaging & Planning

The use of advanced imaging tools, such as CT scans and computer modeling, facilitates surgical planning.

Orthognathic Surgery

Corrective jaw surgery involves cutting and repositioning the upper jaw (maxilla), lower jaw (mandible), or double jaw under general anesthesia. It may also include chin reshaping (genioplasty) and jawline surgery, also known as jaw contouring or reshaping.

Underbite surgery

Underbite surgery fixes a lower jaw that sticks out or extends too far. It moves your bottom jaw back to the right spot, making it easier to chew, talk clearly, and keep your teeth healthy. Surgery fixes the underlying abnormality of the bones.

Post-Op Recovery & Orthodontics

Recovery period with swelling/discomfort managed through medication. After surgery for six months or more, you may need more orthodontic treatment to fine-tune your bite.

Final Results

This was achieved after complete healing, with improved jaw alignment, bite, facial aesthetics (face appearance), and resolution of functional issues.

Following surgery, patients can expect some swelling and discomfort, which can be managed with medication and proper post-operative care. Most patients can return to work or school within 1-3 weeks, although full recovery may take several months.

I did Hijama (wet cupping) with Dr Ebtisam Kotkat. I was initially nervous about the treatment, however once I started I could feel the difference. She also gave me an amazing massage and got rid of the knots in my neck. After the treatment, I felt like a new person - refreshed and totally relaxed. I would highly recommend a treatment with Dr Kotkat.

Frequently Asked Question

People who have surgery don’t feel any pain because they are under general anesthesia. However, it is normal to feel pain, discomfort, and swelling after surgery once the anesthesia goes off. Usually, painkillers the doctor gives can help with this for the first week after surgery.

Yes, surgery on your jaw may change the way you look. The surgery and the severity of the problem will determine this. Even if the changes aren’t obvious, they can make a person look and sound different.

The surgery can last one to three hours, depending on the complexity of the case and whether one or both jaws need to be operated on.

The jaw typically begins to heal within six weeks, but complete healing can take up to 12 weeks. Patients usually need to stay in the hospital for one to two nights following the surgery. During the initial recovery phase, a diet of liquids or soft foods is necessary.

Most individuals can resume light activities within 4 to 7 days and can return to work or school after about two weeks. However, those engaged in physically demanding jobs or hobbies may require up to eight weeks of recovery.

No, because the cuts are made inside the mouth, most people don’t see any scars on the outside. The gum tissue inside the mouth can heal quickly, so any scarring is generally not too bad and goes away in 9 to 12 months.

During surgery, bone plates, screws, and sometimes wires or rubber bands are used to keep the jaws in the right place and keep them from moving while they heal.

According to most reports, double jaw surgery costs normally range from AED 15,000 to AED 25,000. However, this could increase in more complicated instances requiring extra operations at luxury clinics or hospitals.

Jaw surgery can be a very effective treatment for sleep apnea, especially in severe cases. Repositioning the jaw bones opens up the airway, allowing for smoother breathing during sleep. Studies show success rates as high as 90% in treating sleep apnea with jaw surgery.

This treatment has a very high success rate. Studies have indicated that the long-term success rates for treating obstructive sleep apnea are nearly 90%. Remarkably, we have achieved a 100% success rate with the patients we have treated.
