Common Dental Problems in Children and How to Handle Them

Hello, parents! Here we are sharing some insights into the dental issues many kids face and how we can work together to prevent and treat them. Our goal is to keep those little smiles bright and healthy.

Cavities: The Sneaky Spots

  • What They Are: Cavities are basically small holes in teeth that happen when too much sugar is left on the teeth, and it turns into acid that can wear away the tooth.
  • Prevention: Limit sugary snacks and drinks, and make sure your child brushes their teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Treatment: If cavities do happen, don’t worry. We can fix them with fillings to stop any pain and prevent further damage.

Gum Disease

  • What It Is: It starts with red, swollen gums that might bleed while brushing. It’s caused by too much plaque—a sticky film of food and germs—on the teeth.
  • Prevention: Good brushing and flossing habits are key. And, visiting us regularly helps keep everything clean and healthy.
  • Treatment: Catching it early means we can treat it easily with a good cleaning and more careful brushing and flossing at home.

Toothaches: Ouch! My Tooth Hurts

  • What They Are: Toothaches can happen for many reasons, like cavities, cracked teeth, or new teeth coming in.
  • Prevention: Regular check-ups help us spot problems early. Protective gear for sports can prevent injuries.
  • Treatment: If your child has a toothache, come see us. We’ll find out why it hurts and make a plan to fix it.

Bad Habits: Thumb-Sucking and More

  • What It Is: Habits like thumb-sucking can affect how teeth line up and can even change the shape of the mouth.
  • Prevention: Encouragement and positive reinforcement are great ways to help your child break these habits.
  • Treatment: If needed, we can suggest appliances that help discourage the habit and protect your child’s teeth.

Early Childhood Caries (Baby Bottle Tooth Decay)

  • What It Is: Decay in young children’s teeth, often seen in those who go to bed with a bottle of milk or juice.
  • Prevention: Water should be the only bedtime beverage. Encourage drinking from a cup as they approach their first birthday.
  • Treatment: Regular dental check-ups allow us to catch and treat decay early, often with simple fillings.

Molar-Incisor Hypomineralization

  • What It Is: Some of the permanent teeth come in with less mineral, look chalky, and are more prone to cavities.
  • Prevention: While it’s hard to prevent, regular dental visits can catch it early.
  • Treatment: We can protect these teeth with sealants and recommend special care to keep them strong.

Chips, Cracks, and Knockouts – Emergencies

  • What They Are: Injuries to the teeth from falls or accidents.
  • Prevention: Mouthguards for sports, and child-proofing your home can reduce risks.
  • Treatment: Save any knocked-out teeth and see us immediately. Many injuries are treatable with prompt care.

Ankylosis (Stuck Teeth)

  • What It Is: Sometimes a baby tooth gets stuck to the bone, preventing it from falling out naturally.
  • Prevention: Regular check-ups help us monitor tooth movement and spacing.
  • Treatment: We might need to remove the stuck tooth to make way for the permanent one.

Pericoronitis (Wisdom Tooth Pain)

  • What It Is: Inflammation around a tooth that doesn’t have enough room to come in, often a wisdom tooth.
  • Prevention: We keep an eye on the development of your child’s teeth, which helps us anticipate problems.
  • Treatment: Sometimes, removing the offending tooth is the best option to prevent pain and infection.

Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)

  • What It Is: Grinding teeth during sleep or stress.
  • Prevention: Reducing stress before bed can help. Pay attention to your child’s stress levels.
  • Treatment: We can suggest a mouth guard to protect their teeth from damage.

I did Hijama (wet cupping) with Dr Ebtisam Kotkat. I was initially nervous about the treatment, however once I started I could feel the difference. She also gave me an amazing massage and got rid of the knots in my neck. After the treatment, I felt like a new person - refreshed and totally relaxed. I would highly recommend a treatment with Dr Kotkat.

Our Pediatric Dental Care Process

  • Initial Check-Up: We start with a gentle examination to understand your child’s oral health and development. This helps us catch any concerns early.
  • Orthodontic Look-Over: For children a bit older, we check how their teeth and jaws are growing. This is to make sure everything’s on track and to spot any future issues.
  • Dental Cleaning: Every six months, we clean your child’s teeth to keep them sparkling and healthy. It’s also a great time to show your child how to brush and floss properly.
  • Fluoride Treatment: After cleaning, we apply a quick fluoride treatment to strengthen their teeth and prevent cavities.
  • Tell-Show-Do Technique: We explain procedures step-by-step and allow your child to see the instruments before they’re used.
  • Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas): In some cases, we may offer nitrous oxide, a safe and calming gas, to help ease anxiety.
  • Sedation Dentistry: For children with significant dental anxiety, we may discuss sedation dentistry options with you.
