The Importance Of Periodontal Health

Your gums are very important for keeping your teeth in place and keeping your oral cavity healthy in general. Plaque and bacteria that build up along the gum line can cause swelling, infections, and the gum and bone structures to slowly break down. This can then make teeth lose, move, or even fall out.

But if it is not treated, gum disease has effects that go far beyond the mouth. New research has found links between gum problems and several other health problems, such as diabetes, heart disease, and breathing problems. Getting rid of gum disease where it starts is the best way to protect your smile and your health as a whole.

Understanding Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease is a long-lasting inflammatory condition that impacts the gums, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone, which support the teeth. The disease usually gets worse in stages, starting with gingivitis and ending with more severe forms of periodontitis.

Gingivitis

A condition called gingivitis, which causes inflammation of the gums, is the first sign of periodontal disease. This is usually caused by plaque and bacteria building up along the gum line. The gums may look red, and swollen, and bleed easily when you brush or floss at this point. Gingivitis can often be fixed by taking care of your teeth and having them cleaned by a professional.

Periodontitis

If you do not treat gingivitis, it can get worse and turn into periodontitis, which is a more serious form of gum disease. At this point, the inflammation is so bad that it is starting to damage the jawbone and gum tissue that supports the teeth. As a result, deep pockets can form between the teeth and gums. These pockets are perfect for harmful bacteria to grow. If you do not fix it right away, this can lead to tooth loss over time.

What Causes Periodontal/Gum Disease

Several factors can make someone more likely to develop periodontal disease. These include:

  1. Poor Oral Hygiene: If you don’t brush, floss, or go to the dentist regularly, plaque and bacteria can build up and cause gum disease and inflammation.
  2. Smoking: Periodontal disease is more likely to happen if you smoke because tobacco can make it harder for your body to fight off infections and heal properly.
  3. Diabetes: People whose diabetes isn’t under control are more likely to get periodontal disease because diabetes can weaken the immune system and make it easier for infections to spread.
  4. Changes in Hormones: When hormones change, like during pregnancy or menopause, the gums can become more sensitive and more likely to get inflamed.
  5. Medications: Certain medications, including antidepressants, cancer therapies, and blood pressure pills, can affect the gums in ways that increase the risk of periodontal disease.
  6. Genetics: Some people are genetically more susceptible to periodontal diseases, which means they need to take better care of their teeth and gums and see their dentist more often.

Non-surgical Treatments

Non-surgical treatments like these are for people with mild to moderate periodontal disease:

  1. Scaling and Root Planing: This process, which is also called a “deep cleaning,” gets rid of plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line and smooths out the root surfaces to help the gums heal.
  2. Antibiotic Therapy: If necessary, the periodontist may suggest either topical or systemic antibiotics to help manage the bacterial infection and speed up the healing process.
  3. Laser Gum Treatment: This procedure uses laser technology to remove only diseased gum tissue while encouraging healthy tissue to grow back.

Surgical Treatments

For patients who have more advanced periodontal disease, they may suggest surgery like:

  • Pocket Reduction Surgery: This is also called “gum surgery,” and it involves folding back the gum tissue to get rid of bacteria and smooth out any damaged bone. This makes it easier for the gums to attach back to the teeth.
  • Soft Tissue Grafting: If your gums have receded, your periodontist may use donor tissue in a grafting procedure to cover the exposed root surfaces and bring back the gum line.
  • Bone Grafting: If a lot of bone has been lost, the periodontist may suggest a bone grafting procedure to grow back the bone and keep the teeth in place.
  • Putting in dental implants: The Kairon Polyclinic team can help people who are missing teeth get a full, healthy smile again because they are experts at putting in dental implants through surgery.

Frequently Asked Question

Bacterial plaque buildup along the gum line of teeth causes gum diseases. The toxins produced by the bacteria in plaque have the potential to irritate the gums and result in infection and other issues.

A dentist takes care of the teeth, gums, and other parts of the mouth, while a periodontist only works on the gums and the bone that holds the teeth in place. The periodontist sees patients who need to see a specialist instead of a general dentist because their problems are severe and complicated.

You should see a periodontist if you notice that your gums are pulling away from your teeth or if your teeth look like they are getting longer. If your teeth look longer and feel loose, it could mean that your gums are receding and you are losing bone because of periodontal disease.

The cost of gum grafting at Kairon Polyclinic starts from AED 800.

Dark spots on the gums can sometimes indicate gum diseases like gingivitis or periodontitis. If you notice other symptoms of gum disease, such as bleeding, receding, tender, or swollen gums, pain when chewing, or tooth loss, make an appointment with your dentist immediately.

Dental splinting increases teeth’ stability by joining them together with a thin fiber-reinforced wire. This allows teeth to operate normally, and it also keeps teeth healthy.

If you don’t treat gingivitis, it can turn into periodontitis, which is a worse kind of gum disease. This happens when the infection makes pockets in your gums that destroy the jawbone, causing teeth to get loose and possibly fall out.
