What is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening is a popular cosmetic dental procedure that aims to lighten your teeth by removing stains and discoloration. It improves the overall appearance of your teeth and gives a brighter, whiter, and fresh look.

Remember that dental whitening treatment should be done under a professional dentist’s supervision to avoid harming your teeth and gums.

Causes of Tooth Discoloration (Extrinsic & Intrinsic)

Tooth discoloration can occur for various reasons, classified as extrinsic and intrinsic causes. Here are the details:

Extrinsic Causes

These causes lead to staining on the anterior surface of your teeth due to external factors. Using colored food and beverages, including:

  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Red wine
  • Spicy foods (Curries and sauces)
  • Frequent Smoking
  • Using tobacco products
  • Inadequate brushing and flossing
  • Poor oral hygiene

Intrinsic causes

These discoloration causes occur from within the tooth, including:

  • Aging (Dental structure yellowing over time)
  • Medications, e.g., tetracycline
  • Dental fluorosis (excessive fluoride exposure)
  • Trauma/Injury to the tooth

Who is the best fit for Teeth Whitening?

Before considering teeth whitening, it is necessary to understand whether the procedure suits you. Our professional dentists evaluate your eligibility first to ensure a safe and effective process. You are the best fit for Teeth Whitening if:

  • You are an adult with healthy teeth and gums
  • Teeth become naturally yellow with age
  • Teeth discoloration due to extrinsic factors
  • No active gum disease
  • No exposed tooth roots
  • No cracked, chipped teeth

In-Office Professional Teeth Whitening

Our experienced dentists perform this bleaching method in a controlled clinical environment. The popular techniques include:

  • Zoom Teeth Whitening: For this, we use a Philips zoom kit with a specialized LED light and Philips whitening gel to whiten your teeth in a single visit.
  • Laser Teeth Whitening: A high-intensity laser activates the bleaching gel, which helps it penetrate deep into the tooth enamel and break down the hardened stains.
  • LED Teeth Whitening: Almost similar to the laser process, but in this case, it uses the LED (Light Emitting Diode) lights to activate the gel.
Procedure Guide and Expectations

You must pass through the following steps during the in-office teeth bleaching process:

  1. Our dentists will apply a protective barrier layer over your gums to prevent irritation.
  2. A teeth-bleaching gel (which contains hydrogen peroxide) is then applied to your teeth.
  3. Depending on the technique, a Zoom light, an LED light, or a laser will activate the gel.
  4. This procedure may be repeated several times to get the optimal results.
Advantages
  • Quick results
  • A safe process under dentist supervision
  • Personalized bleaching that suits you
Limitations
  • Expensive than at-home kits
  • Cause temporary tooth sensitivity and gum irritation

At-Home Teeth Whitening Kits

A Home teeth whitening kit is a great and more relaxing dental procedure for individuals who want to sparkle their teeth at home. Our customized kits include:

  • Over-the-Counter Products: These contain a lower concentration of lightening agents like hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide and are less effective than professional ones.
  • Dentist Prescribed Kits: Our dentist prescribed these kits containing higher-quality brightening agents and custom-made trays for a better fit. It’s more effective than over-the-counter products but has slow results.
Procedure Guide and What to Expect

A dental checkup is necessary to confirm your eligibility for the procedure. Moreover, for optimal results, you must clean your teeth at least 3 to 4 times before the procedure. The rest includes:

  1. Our dentists will take impressions of your teeth using the intraoral digital scanners.
  2. We will provide you with a high-quality gel and tray for better results.
  3. Wear your trays along with gel twice a day or at night, and you will see the results.

I did Hijama (wet cupping) with Dr Ebtisam Kotkat. I was initially nervous about the treatment, however once I started I could feel the difference. She also gave me an amazing massage and got rid of the knots in my neck. After the treatment, I felt like a new person - refreshed and totally relaxed. I would highly recommend a treatment with Dr Kotkat.

Frequently Asked Question

The longevity of your bleaching results may vary, but it depends on the post-treatment care; they usually last 6 months to 2 years before touch-ups are needed.

No, professional teeth whitening is specifically designed to provide a natural-looking brighter shade that matches with your overall appearance.

Simply put, if a professional dentist performs the procedure, then the process is totally safe and does not cause any damage.

Temporary sensitivity is common, but our dentists provide you with desensitizing products that minimize the discomfort.

No, remember, it only works on the natural tooth enamel. For optimal results, the existing dental work needs to be replaced to match the new whiter shade.

It’s not very effective on the deep internal stains. Your dentist can advise you on better treatment options like veneers, etc.

Yes, it works. But it’s recommended to postpone dental bleaching until after your pregnancy and breastfeeding.

After the in-office process, you will see a brighter smile immediately. On the other hand, it takes several weeks for home kits to produce effective results.

No, it will not change the color of any preexisting filling.

Whitening is not permanent. With time, you will need touch-up treatment as your teeth become re-exposed to staining agents.

In-office procedures are more expensive, but they provide faster and more noticeable results because they are performed under professional supervision. At Kairon Polyclinic, the prices for whitening start from 555 AED and go up to 2500 AED.

It’s generally safer for adults with healthy gums and teeth. However, it’s also not recommended for children and adolescents.
